When Something Has Too Much Power Over You

Most people think addiction looks a certain way. Substance abuse. Rock bottom. Dramatic intervention.

But that's not always how it shows up.

Sometimes it's a drink you need to get through the evening. The gambling that started as fun and is now out of control. The pornography that's pulling you somewhere you don't want to go. The behavior you keep returning to even after you've promised yourself you wouldn't. The thing that, when you're honest with yourself, has more power over you than you'd like to admit.

Addiction isn't always obvious or in your face. Sometimes it's just a pattern you can't seem to break, and a quiet awareness that it's costing you something.

If any of that sounds familiar, you don't have to have it all figured out before you talk to someone.

What John Sees

John Adkins is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, which means he's trained specifically to understand how addictive patterns work and how they affect every part of a person's life. He works with people dealing with all kinds of addictions, not just substance use.

That includes:

  • Alcohol and drugs

  • Gambling

  • Sex and pornography

  • Behavioral patterns and compulsions

  • Anything that has taken hold of your time, your attention, or your choices in ways that feel hard to control

He also works with people who aren't sure whether what they're experiencing is an addiction at all. If you're asking the question, that's usually worth exploring.

You Don't Have to Call It Anything

One of the hardest parts of reaching out is the label. Admitting you have a problem. Deciding whether what you're dealing with is serious enough to get help for.

John doesn't require you to walk in with it figured out or with a decision to change already made. He's going to listen to what's actually happening in your life, look at how the pattern is affecting you, and work with you from there.

His approach is direct but not harsh. He's not here to lecture you or make you feel worse about something you already feel bad about. He's here to help you understand what's going on and figure out what you actually want to do about it.

How It Affects More Than You Think

Addiction rarely stays in one lane. It affects relationships, work, self-worth, physical health, and the way you move through the world. Part of John's work is helping people see the full picture, not just the behavior itself but what it's connected to and what it's covering up.

He works with individuals 18 and up. He has immediate availability for new clients.

I'm not sure I'm actually addicted. Is that okay to bring up?

Yes, and it's one of the most common starting points. John works with people who are still trying to figure out whether they have a problem, not just people who have already decided they do. If the question is on your mind, it's worth exploring.

Does John only work with substance use, or does he work with other types of addiction?

He works with all kinds of addictive patterns, including alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex and pornography, and other behavioral compulsions. His LCAS credential reflects specialized training in the full range of addictive disorders.

Do I have to want to quit before I come in?

No. John doesn't require you to arrive with a decision already made. A lot of the work early on is helping people get clear on what they actually want, not telling them what they should want.

Will my insurance cover addiction counseling?

We accept BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Medcost. We do not accept Medicaid or Medicare. Coverage for addiction counseling varies by plan, so call us before scheduling and we'll help you figure out what your plan covers.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Therapy is confidential by law. John will explain the narrow exceptions at the start of your first session. Outside of those, what you share stays between you and him.
