Men's Therapy in Kernersville, NC
There are things you're carrying that you haven't said out loud.

Maybe you've never been the guy who talks about feelings. Maybe you've tried and it didn't go well. Maybe the people around you wouldn't understand, or you're not even sure they'd take it seriously.
So you keep going. You handle it. You push through.
And it works, until it doesn't.
A lot of men who come to see John Adkins aren't in crisis. They're just quietly exhausted. Stuck in a version of their life that looks fine from the outside but feels hollow on the inside. Carrying things they can't put down and don't know who to hand them to.
If that sounds familiar, you're in the right place.
What Men Actually Come In For
There's no single story. But there are some that come up again and again.
The pressure to be everything at once. The job demands everything you have. So does home. You're supposed to be present, productive, patient, and strong, all at the same time. And when you get to the end of the day, there's nothing left. You don't know how to turn it off, and you're not sure anyone would understand if you tried to explain it.
Not fitting the mold. You're not a sports guy. You're a stay-at-home dad, or a creative, or someone who just never connected with the version of masculinity that seemed like the only option. Making friends as an adult man is hard when you don't fit the template. That loneliness is real, even if it's hard to name.
Questions about who you are now. Your career has changed. Your role has changed. What you thought your life would look like isn't what it looks like. That loss of identity, purpose, or direction isn't weakness. It's a real thing that deserves real attention.
The thoughts you're not saying. Body image. Shame around health issues. Feeling like you're supposed to be fine with things you're not fine with. Emotions that don't seem to have anywhere to go. Men have these experiences too, even when the world acts like they don't.
Sober curiosity. You're questioning your relationship with alcohol or substances. Not necessarily because things have fallen apart, but because something feels off. You want to think it through without being told what to do about it.
How John Works
John Adkins listens before he offers anything. He's going to try to understand what's actually going on, and work from there.
His approach is direct without being harsh, and practical without being dismissive. He's not going to make therapy feel like a performance or a confession. He's going to make it feel like a conversation with someone who takes you seriously.
John works with adult men and older adults. He specializes in addiction counseling, trauma, and the kind of tangled, hard-to-name struggles that don't fit neatly into a category.
He has immediate availability for new clients.

Do I have to be in crisis to come in?
No. Most of the men who reach out to John aren't in crisis. They're just tired of carrying something they don't have a good place to put. That's enough of a reason to call.
I've never done therapy before. What do I actually say?
You don't have to have it scripted. John will ask questions and help you find your way into it. The first conversation is more about figuring out what's going on than solving it.
I'm not sure my problems are serious enough for therapy.
If something is affecting your life, your relationships, or how you feel on a daily basis, it's serious enough. You don't need to earn your way into getting help.
Will my insurance cover this?
We accept BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Medcost. We do not accept Medicaid or Medicare. If you're not sure what your plan covers, call us and we'll help you figure it out before you schedule.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. What you share in therapy is protected by law. There are narrow exceptions, such as situations involving imminent safety risk, and John will explain those clearly at the start. Outside of those, your sessions are between you and him.
