Trauma Therapy in Kernersville, NC
Trauma doesn't always look the way people expect it to. Whatever it is, you've been carrying it long enough.
You've Been Carrying This Long Enough
Trauma doesn't always look the way people expect it to. It's not always a single event you can point to. Sometimes it's years of something. A relationship that wore you down. A childhood that asked too much of you. A series of things that piled up quietly until the weight of them became impossible to ignore.
Whatever it is, you've probably gotten pretty good at managing it. Pushing through. Finding ways to keep going. Maybe you've told yourself it wasn't that bad, or that other people have been through worse, or that you should be over it by now.
But something brought you here. And that's worth paying attention to.
What Trauma Actually Does
Trauma isn't just a memory. It's something your body and your brain learned in response to something that felt threatening or overwhelming. And once that learning happens, it tends to stick around long after the situation that caused it is gone.
That's why trauma can show up as anxiety that doesn't seem to have a clear source. Trouble sleeping. Feeling on edge or shut down. Reacting to things in ways that don't quite match the moment. Avoiding people, places, or situations without being entirely sure why.
It's not weakness. It's your nervous system doing its job, just in a context where that job is no longer necessary.
Therapy helps your brain and body learn that the threat has passed. It's slow, careful work. But it works.
Who Josh Works With
Josh May has spent his career working with people navigating trauma, from teens dealing with it for the first time to adults who have been living with it for years. He has seen it in many forms, across many different kinds of lives, and he brings that experience into every session.
He works with adults and with teens ages 12 and up. If you're a parent who is concerned about your teenager, Josh can help you figure out whether therapy is the right next step and what that might look like for your family.
His approach is grounded in care and consistency. He's not going to rush you or push you somewhere you're not ready to go. Trauma work takes time, and Josh understands that. He has the patience and the experience to work through even the most chronic and long-standing situations.
He has immediate availability for new clients.
What to Expect
Starting therapy for trauma can feel like a big step, especially if you've never done it before or if previous attempts haven't felt right.
The first sessions are about understanding what you're dealing with and building enough trust to do the work. Josh is going to listen more than he talks. He's going to try to understand your specific experience, not fit you into a template.
From there, the work is collaborative. You set the pace. There's no script and no timeline that applies to everyone. The goal is to help you get to a place where the past has less power over your present.
