Therapy During Pregnancy in Kernersville, NC
Everyone keeps asking if you're excited. Nobody's asking how you're actually doing.
Pregnancy Doesn't Always Feel the Way People Expect
Pregnancy comes with a script. You're supposed to glow. You're supposed to be excited. You're supposed to spend your evenings picking out nursery colors.
And maybe some days you do. But other days you're lying awake running worst-case scenarios, or feeling flat and disconnected, or wondering why you don't feel the way everyone keeps telling you that you should.
That gap between what you're supposed to feel and what you actually feel can be one of the loneliest parts of pregnancy. You don't have to sit in it by yourself.
What Brings People to Prenatal Therapy
Some of what we hear most often from expecting moms in Kernersville and across the Triad:
Constant worry about the baby's health, even after good appointments
Feeling sad, numb, or disconnected from the pregnancy
Intrusive thoughts that feel scary and impossible to say out loud
Fear of labor and delivery, especially after a difficult birth before
Being pregnant again after a miscarriage or loss, and not being able to relax into it
Relationship strain, big life changes, or feeling unprepared for what's coming
A history of anxiety or depression and worry about how pregnancy will affect it
None of this means you're going to be a bad mom. It means you're a person going through one of the biggest transitions there is.
Anxiety and Depression During Pregnancy Are Real, and Treatable
A lot of people only hear about postpartum depression, so it can be confusing when the hard feelings show up before the baby does. Perinatal mood and anxiety symptoms can start during pregnancy, not just after. Getting support early can make the whole transition, including those first months at home, feel more manageable.
Therapy during pregnancy gives you a place to sort through what you're feeling, build coping tools you can actually use at 3am, and plan ahead for the postpartum period so it doesn't catch you off guard.
Pregnancy After Loss
If you've lost a pregnancy before, a new one can bring hope and fear in the same breath. You might be counting weeks, dreading appointments, or holding back from bonding just in case. That's not you being negative. That's grief and love trying to share the same space. If you're still carrying that earlier loss, our pregnancy loss counseling page is a good place to start.

Is it normal to feel anxious or depressed during pregnancy?
It's more common than most people realize. Mood and anxiety symptoms can show up at any point in pregnancy, not only after birth. If it's affecting your sleep, your relationships, or how you get through the day, it's worth talking about.
I'm having scary thoughts about the baby. Does that mean something is wrong with me?
Unwanted intrusive thoughts are a common and treatable part of perinatal anxiety, and having them doesn't mean you want them to happen. Talking about them with a therapist trained in perinatal mental health is often what takes their power away.
Can I do sessions by telehealth?
Yes. Mette offers telehealth as well as in-person sessions, which helps when appointments and exhaustion are already filling up your week.
Can my partner come to a session?
Yes. Pregnancy changes both people, and sometimes it helps to have your partner in the room. Talk with your therapist about what would be most useful.
Will my insurance cover therapy during pregnancy?
We accept BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Medcost. We do not accept Medicaid or Medicare. Call us before scheduling and we'll help you check your benefits.
